Anthony Bloom (Metropolitan of Sourozh

The Christian is one who must be capable of seeing history as God sees it, as a mystery of salvation but also as a tragedy of human fallenness and sin… God is the Lord of history, but we must be co-workers with God, and we are sent by Him into this world of His, in order to make the discordant city of men into the harmony which will be called the city of God… words which can be repeated from year to year.“ ‘I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown,’ and he replied: ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand in the hand of God; that shall be better to you than light and safer than a known way.’ ”

Archimandrite Sophrony of Essex

There are times, when the love of Christ touches us, that we feel eternity. This cannot be understood rationally. God acts in a manner proper to Himself, which is beyond reason. We must not be too logical in our Christian life.

Remain in prayer, persevere, go through the day without sin. All the rest will be given by God Himself.

Prayer is like a strong hand clinging fast to God’s raiment, at all times and in all places: in the turmoil of the crowd, in the pleasant hours of leisure, in periods of loneliness. At first the struggle for prayer seems to be beyond our strength but if she persists the soul will eventually be able to contain within herself at the same time sorrow and joy; despair and hope.

As soon as we lose humility, any ascetic effort is canceled. If pride, criticism or unfriendly working in us, the Lord is away from us. We come to God as the worst of sinners. We condemn ourselves at all. Do not look for nothing but forgiveness and mercy. We condemn ourselves to Hell. And this is our permanent state. We ask God to help us grieve not the Holy Spirit through our passions, nor to injure our brothers. Do not look for special gifts from above. With all our strength trying to grasp the true significance of Christ’s commandments and live according to them.

When the opposition of the Christian spirit to the spirit of this world reaches its peak, life for the follower of Christ becomes a crucifixion, however invisible the cross. It is a terrible and at the same time salutary period: through inner suffering, often linked with physical or material distress, the passions are conquered. The power of this world over us, even death itself, is defeated. We start to become like Christ crucified.
Even now, however, we must preserve humility of spirit. The moment we begin to feel satisfied with ourselves the whole spiritual ladder collapses and “our house is left unto us desolate.”

O Lord Jesus Christ, Unoriginate Word of Thine Unoriginate Father, have mercy upon us. Save us and Thy world.”

Establish, O Good One, the fruitful vine, which your right hand has planted with love upon the earth, preserving your Church, O All-powerful.

Grant, Lord, that those who in faith sing your praise as God of the universe, may pass through this year abounding in spiritual works, well-pleasing to God.

Of the Indiction. Ode 3. The Irmos..

Establish me, O Christ, on the unshakeable rock of your commandments, and enlighten me with the light of your face; for none is holy but you, O Lover of mankind.
